Rotation numbers explained
The numbers beside every game on a sportsbook board, how they are assigned, and how to use them.
A rotation number is a short number a sportsbook assigns to each side of a game so that bettors and clerks can name a bet without ambiguity. Instead of saying "the Rams, minus three, against the Raiders", a bettor at the counter says "four seventy-one, minus three." Every team in every game on the day's sheet has its own number, and the numbers are published daily.
Why sportsbooks use them
Team names are slow to say and easy to confuse. College sports have several teams called Miami or Washington, and some days include the same two teams twice, as in an MLB doubleheader or a long series. A number removes the doubt. It also lets a clerk type a bet in a second, and it keeps printed lines on a board or sheet short. The habit started with paper sheets and wall boards at Las Vegas counters and carried over to phone apps and call-in lines, where you still see the numbers beside each matchup.
The basic rule: away is odd, home is the next number
Within a game, the away team gets the lower, odd number and the home team gets the next number up, which is even. So 471 is the away side and 472 is the home side of the same game. The away team is listed on top, which is why a board reads like a two-line scoreboard. Games are numbered in schedule order for that sport and day: the earliest game starts the sequence and each later game takes the next pair. That means you can tell roughly how late a game is from its number.
| Rot | Team | Spread | Total | ML |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 471 | Away team | +3 | o 44.5 | +140 |
| 472 | Home team | −3 | u 44.5 | −165 |
A made-up example: 471 is the away side, 472 the home side of the same game.
Each sport has its own range
Numbers are grouped by sport, so a number rarely means two different things on the same day. Ranges seen on the daily sheet this season:
- NFL: three-digit numbers, and the block moves every week. In Week 7 the Sunday games ran 451 to 472, with Monday night at 475. In Week 8 the Thursday game was 109, Sunday ran 239 to 264, and Monday night was 265. Never assume last week's block.
- College football: usually starts at 301 for the first game of the week, though the week of November 1 started at 101. FCS games use six-digit numbers such as 309017.
- NBA: 501 to about 595. Holiday games can get high numbers well in advance.
- NHL: short numbers, one or two digits, in the range of roughly 1 to 67.
- MLB: numbers in the 900s. World Series games sat at 955 to 963.
- College basketball: assigned once the season is underway; we do not publish guessed numbers.
Why the NFL block moves
The block depends on how many games are on the entire sheet for that week and where the book's numbering sheet starts. Nothing says Week 9 will look like Week 8, so numbers from a previous week are only useful for spotting the pattern. The pattern that does hold is odd for away, the next number for home, in kickoff order.
The live-betting prefix
Some data feeds and live-betting systems add a leading 9 once a game has started, so a game numbered 475 before kickoff might appear as 9475 while in progress, and an NHL 65 might show as 965. It marks the in-play version of the same game. FreeOdds shows the original pregame number, because that is the number on the printed sheet.
How to use them at a counter
- Find the game on the board and read the rotation number of the side you want, not the number of the other team.
- Say the number, the bet type and the line: "four seventy-one, plus three" or "four seventy-two, moneyline."
- For totals, books commonly use the away number for the over and the home number for the under, but ask the clerk if you are unsure.
- Check the line and price on the ticket before you leave the window. Lines can move between the time you read the board and the time you bet.

Frequently asked questions
What is a rotation number?
A rotation number is a short identifier a sportsbook gives each side of a game. Bettors and clerks use it to name a bet quickly and without confusing similar team names.
Why is the away team always odd?
It is the long-standing convention on daily sheets: the away team takes the odd number and the home team takes the next number, so 471 is the away side and 472 is the home side of the same game.
Do rotation numbers change every day?
Yes. The numbers are assigned per sheet, in schedule order, and the starting point differs by sport and by day. NFL blocks even move from week to week.
What does a 9 in front of a rotation number mean?
Some feeds add a leading 9 when a game is in progress, as in 9475 for game 475. It marks the live-betting version of the same game.
Where can I see today's rotation numbers?
Today's numbers are listed on this page and on the live FreeOdds board, in rotation order for each sport.
